「竹は軽量かつ柔軟性に富むため、古来より生活のなかで重用されてきましたが、プラスチックなどの石油製品が、それに替わるものとして普及したためです。」これは、「なぜ竹は使われなくなったのか？」という問いに対する生徒の答えです。竹が使われなくなった結果、各地で問題になっている竹害。その対策の一つとして、環境創造コース2年生は総合実習の授業でバンブーキャンドルづくりに取り組んでいます。
5月15日（金）同コース生は、竹林の整備を兼ねてバンブーキャンドルの材料を得るために地域の竹林にでかけました。太さがおよそ６cm以上で真っ直ぐな竹を選び、根本から切り竹林から運び出した後、枝を取り除きトラックに積める長さにカットしました。
今回採取した竹は、生徒ひとりひとりが思い思いにデザインしたバンブーキャンドルに生まれ変わる予定です。
“Bamboo has been used since ancient times because of its light weight and flexibility, but it has been replaced by petroleum-based materials, such as plastics.” This was one student's answer to the question: “Why is bamboo no longer commonly used?” As people have stopped using bamboo, unmanaged wild bamboo has become a problem in many areas. As a countermeasure, second-year students in the Environmental Creation Course are engaged in making bamboo candles as part of their Comprehensive Practice class.
On Thursday, May 15th, the students visited a local bamboo grove to collect materials for bamboo candles, which also contributed to maintaining the bamboo grove. They selected straight bamboo with a diameter of at least 6 cm, cut them from the roots, removed the branches, and trimmed them to a size suitable for a truck box. The bamboo harvested today will be turned into bamboo candles designed by each student.
