On Saturday, April 27th, volunteer students and people participated in an activity to weed Harzaki Yamarashi, an invasive alien species called wintercress in English. It was organized by FFJ, Shimotakai Nourin High School.
This is the third consecutive year for this activity. Volunteers were divided into two groups and visited the banks of Tarugawa River (Kijimadaira Village) and Chikuma River (Iiyama City). They searched for and pulled out Haruzaki Yamagarashi, which resembles rapeseed. On this hot day, volunteers wiped off sweat and hydrated themselves as they worked. The amount of Harusaki Yamagarashi they weeded in two hours was about 490 kg, roughly twice the load of a small truck.
Continuous and steady activities like this will lead to the preservation of ecosystems and landscapes.
