地図アプリが進歩した結果、英語で道を尋ねられる頻度は減りました。しかし、大型商業施設や階層の多い建物内などでは、どこに何があるのかがわかりにくく迷いやすいこともあります。接客業では、海外からの観光客に案内する機会も増えています。
そこで、３年生の実用英語の授業では、ショッピングモール内を想定して、道案内をする練習を行いました。ペアで異なる情報が載った地図を見ながら「階段を上って」「突き当りを右に」「ATMの向かいにありますよ」など、実践的なフレーズを用いて、生徒は相手を目的地へと案内しました。最初は様々なフレーズを一度に使うことに戸惑っていた生徒も、練習を重ねるうちに案内に慣れていきました。授業終わりには、自信を持って英語で案内できるようになりました。この活動を通して英語が実社会でどう活用できるか、体験できたのではないでしょうか。
As map apps have developed, we are less likely to be asked for directions in English. However, people sometimes still need help at places such as large shopping malls or high-rise buildings. In the hospitality industry, there are many opportunities to guide international visitors.
In the 3rd-year Practical English class, students practiced giving directions by imagining they were at a shopping mall. In pairs, each student had a map with different information and took turns guiding their partner to the place they wanted to go, using expressions such as “Go down the stairs,” “Go straight and turn right,” and “It’s across from the ATM.” At first, they were overwhelmed by using many phrases at once, but with practice, they gradually got the hang of it. By the end of the lesson, they were able to give directions in English confidently and smoothly. This activity helped students see how English can be used in real-life situations.
