On Tuesday, October 28th, first-year students visited the underground tunnels of the Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters in Matsushiro, Nagano Prefecture. Next year, they will visit Hiroshima on their school trip. As a preliminary study for peace learning in Hiroshima, this visit aimed to learn about peace through a local war site.Listening attentively to the guide, the students learned about why the tunnels were built during the war and the harsh labor that was forced upon the workers. From the traces left in the underground site, they reflected on what life might have been like at that time. They also studied the connection between the Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters and the Battle of Okinawa, as well as the subsequent history leading to the atomic bombings and the end of the war.
