 My Oyatsu Dream

                  長野県下伊那農業高等学校アグリサービス科3年 後藤 愛実

Hello everyone. Do you enjoy your school life? I’m working very hard every day as an agricultural high school student and also as the leader of the Interact Club. I major in the course of “ Food and Agriculture” to learn about Nutrition, Nursery and Agriculture. In the club, we do various kinds of volunteer activities and sometimes hold cultural exchange meetings with foreign people living in my local area.
Also, we made a plan to hold an “International Food Festival” every autumn in my town. Many foreigners have a chance to serve their country’s traditional dishes in their booth. There are so many kinds of foods and I’m always surprised at the tastes and texture of the dishes!
Now I’d like to tell you about my dream! Someday I want to go to a developing country and contribute to developing some nutritious food for the children there. To be more specific, I’m going to try to cook some nutritious snacks, OYATSU, using local food materials that are easy to get; and then, demonstrate how to cook them to the local mothers. I think it will be helpful for the children who are suffering from a lack of nutritional balance to live much healthier lives.
This dream began during my activities as the Interact club leader.
Two years ago, I joined the volunteer work group in the Tohoku Area to support people who were still working to rebuild the areas hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake. While I was there, I realized that basic and simple food was essential for the people affected by the disaster.
The other day, I had a chance to listen to the report of a JICA member, who once went to Syria to support their elementary education system. She said,” Syrian people always ask me, ‘When will the Japanese carry out reprisals against America for the atomic bomb? ‘ “ This was very shocking! I think the way of thinking is different from country to country and so we should have a true experience in a foreign country to understand their culture and way of thinking.
Now, my theme for the project study of my course is “The Nutritious-Balanced Oyatsu (snacks) for Syrian children.” In Syria, the date plant (Natsume-yashi) can be seen everywhere and is easy to get! I can invent some delicious, well-balanced Oyatsu from the date plant.
After graduating from high school, I will go to the Junior College of ‘Food and Nursery’. There I can study more for my dream. Then, someday, I’ll try to attend the JICA program and go to some developing country. For that purpose, I work very hard, in addition, I’m now trying to brush up on my English!
