School identity of Nagano Prefecture Nagano Senior High School

(Fig. – School identity diagram)

A school’s distinctive identity is not “something given” but is rather “something that is created” by students and teachers together. Our school mottoes are “Through Pursuit of Sincerity,” “Simplicity and Fortitude” and “Harmony and Teamwork.” Our “Nissinnsho” school bell tolls from day to day telling us “Keep moving forward, don’t sink into conventionalism and don’t rest contented with your former position but strive to widen your scope of knowledge and cultivate positive virtues.” Our school mottoes have been handed down through many generations, but they have been flexibly adapted in tune with the change of the times and social conditions. Thus our students continue to be conscious of our school mottoes both in their individual as well as group activities at school. This allowed them to conceive, based on the school mottoes, our school identity as a pivotal standard of conduct. A conceptual diagram is shown on the right.
Our school identity represents our students’ wish to develop their own “FACE” backed by the school’s spirit of self-help and sense of responsibility. The “FACE” will allow them to positively “Feel,” “Acquire,” “Consider” and “Express,” which will be developed through the learning process, club activities, student council participation and other activities at school.
High school days are those days when students establish their own self consciousness and confidence. According to a Japanese dictionary, one’s self consciousness means: “One’s self that is consciously identified as an individual charged with a certain role or responsibility as a member of society.” As such, for students, establishing their own selves means developing their own “FACE” maturing as persons who have a desire to accept a certain and positive role or responsibility as members of society.
An old saying goes: “Flowers do not bloom on their own, but can only blossom when motivated by warm spring breezes.” Our school is extremely blessed with a superb educational environment; there are highly motivated teachers and staff as well as up-to-date facilities and equipment. We expect each and every one of our students, who learn in such a favorable environment, to develop their own “FACE” through activities and experiences based on the abilities to “Feel,” “Acquire,” “Consider” and “Express” and by enriching each other through friendly competition.
