School History

Jul. 1884: Nagano Prefecture Junior High School established in Nagano City, with branch schools in Matsumoto, Ueda and Iida cities.
1886: Main and branch schools integrated into one and transferred to Matsumoto under the national policy of “One junior high school per prefecture”; renamed Nagano Prefecture Normal Junior High School.
May 1893: The national policy of “One junior high school per prefecture” abolished, leading to establishment of branch schools in Nagano, Ueda and Iida cities.
Apr. 1899: Becomes independent as Nagano Prefectural Nagano Junior High School, making Ueda Normal Junior High School a branch school. 1900: The branch school in Ueda becomes independent.
Apr. 1901: Nagano Junior High School graduates first 50 students.
Apr. 1902: Supplementary course program established.
Apr. 1920: Supplementary course program abolished; renamed Nagano Prefecture Nagano Junior High School.
May 1924: Celebrates 25th anniversary.
May 1929: Celebrates 30th anniversary.
Jun. 1937: Construction of new school building initiated.
May 1940: Celebration ceremonies for 40th anniversary and completion of new school building.
1941: School-owned forest set up at the foot of Mt. Iizuna.
Mar. 1947: The song “Mountains upon Mountains” adopted as the school song.
Apr. 1947: Annex school set up in response to national educational system reform.
Apr. 1948: Under the new educational system, Nagano Prefecture Nagano Kita Senior High School is established, offering full-time and part-time general courses.
Jun. 1948: Celebrates 50th anniversary and sets June 1 as school founding day (school founding day returned to May 1 effective school year 1970).
Apr. 1949: General course curriculum of Nagano City Senior High School is integrated with our school.
Nov. 1951: Construction of school library and infirmary completed.
Mar. 1952: The school turns out first female graduates.
Sep. 1954: As 55th anniversary memorial project, a swimming pool (authorized by Japan Amateur Swimming Federation)/fire pond is completed (funded by donation from alumni association).
Nov. 1956: Second-stage afforestation on school-owned forest completed.
Apr. 1957: Renamed Nagano Prefecture Nagano Senior High School.
Jun. 1958: Celebrates 60th anniversary.
Mar. 1960: New storeroom built on the north side of gymnasium.
Mar. 1961: Auditorium expanded and western entranceway (locker room) newly constructed.
Sep. 1961: New music room built and judo hall expanded.
Oct. 1964: Two new bicycle parking lots for students built.
Sep. 1965: Repair work on Japanese archery hall completed.
Sep. 1966: Swimming pool purifying system newly installed.
Nov. 1968: Structures (incl. former room for physical education teachers) are transferred to group activity hall and ball game practice hall as well as remodeled.
Mar. 1969: Martial arts training hall newly built.
Apr. 1969: Construction of Kinshi-kaikan Hall.
Jun. 1969: Celebrates 70th anniversary.
Mar. 1971: Connecting corridor (Kinshi-kaikan Hall – group activity hall) newly built.
Jul. 1972: Soundproof aluminum sash installed in West Building.
Sep. 1972: Emergency power generation system completed.
Mar. 1973: Two classrooms, social studies office, student council headquarters, meeting room, storeroom, group activity room, male student dressing room, etc. expanded or renovated to accommodate expansion of regular enrolled number of students.
Sep. 1973: Construction of a fireproof warehouse with completely automated security system including the installation of security lights and shutter doors.
Oct. 1973: Additional bicycle parking lot for students built.
Nov. 1973: Following abolition of day and night duties by school staff, the school becomes completely unmanned on non-school days (except day-time duty on Sat., Sun. and national holidays).
Feb. 1974: “Holy Piano” exhibition room established in Kinshi-kaikan Hall.
Apr. 1974: With the introduction of the 12 school district system, our school is included in No. 3 school district.
Jun. 1974: Home economics classroom newly built.
Dec. 1974: Underground oil storage facility newly built.
Mar. 1975: Female student dressing room newly built.
Aug. 1976: Swimming pool dressing room for female students expanded, and eastern and western lavatories improved.
Nov. 1976: Additional bicycle parking lot built.
Aug. 1977: North Building classroom section and classroom interiors remodeled.
Nov. 1977: Roof repairs and construction of additional bicycle parking lot.
Mar. 1978: Library interior and floor repaired.
Apr. 1978: Two-term academic system introduced.
Aug. 1978: Interior of North Building, West Building and Main Building (2nd floor) remodeled.
Mar. 1979: Japanese archery hall (roof and outer wall) repaired and clubhouse newly built.
Apr. 1979: Gymnasium newly built; celebration of 80th anniversary.
Aug. 1979: Interior of Main Building administrative wing, etc. remodeled.
Nov. 1979: Student bicycle parking lot and connecting corridor (North Building – new gymnasium) newly built.
Jan. 1980: Backstop in athletic field repaired.
Mar. 1980: Paving of area in front of main entrance.
Mar. 1981: Part-time course building newly built (course integrated with Nagano Nishi Senior High School); training camp house newly built.
Mar. 1983: Paving of area in front of part-time course building, etc.
Mar. 1984: Clubhouse newly built; retaining wall on southern side of athletic field repaired.
Jun. 1984: Swimming pool interior wall repaired.
Oct. 1984: Earth retaining work of eastern side of athletic field undertaken.
Mar. 1985: Clubhouse newly built; ball fence set up on eastern side of schoolyard.
Mar. 1986: Ball fence set up on southern side of schoolyard; window sash for music room and library replaced.
Oct. 1986: Lavatory septic system completed.
Jan. 1987: Locker room, etc. demolished and removed.
Mar. 1987: Prefabricated new school building constructed.
Aug. 1990: Air-conditioning system installed in West Building.
Oct. 1991: In preparation for school building reconstruction, investigation begun on cultural properties buried under athletic field.
Aug. 1992: School building total reconstruction initiated.
Feb. 1994: New school building completed.
Feb. 1995: Ceremony held to celebrate newly completed school building.
Mar. 1995: Asakawa General Athletic Field completed.
Apr. 1995: 65-minute classwork system begun.
Oct. 1997: Intra-school LAN system completed.
Mar. 1999: Old South Building remodeled.
May ~ Oct. 1999: Centennial-related memorial events held.
Sep. 1999: Former South Building transferred to Kinshi-kai (incorporated association).
Dec. 2002: Kinshi-kaikan Hall (former South Building) designated as registered tangible cultural property.
Sep. 2005: Air-conditioning systems established in library and infirmary.
Nov. 2009: Celebration of 110th anniversary.
Apr. 2012: Electric fan circulation set up in classrooms for 1st and 2nd grade students.
Aug. 2013: Intra-school broadcasting system refurbished.
